Thanksgiving Day

…I will praise You; You are my God, I will exalt You. Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Psalm 118:28-29

David, the sweet Psalmist of Israel, had a heart of praise. He praised God in every season of his life, no matter what he faced. Through good times and bad, he penned the most magnificent Psalms of worship, praise, adoration and thanksgiving. In Psalm 103:1-5, David blessed the Lord and recounted His benefits:

Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who
redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,  who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to remember all the benefits the Lord has bestowed upon us.  As families gather around the table to eat their Thanksgiving dinners, it would be good to take time for each family member to share what they are most thankful for. God is good. He has given us so many blessings, especially those of us living in America.

Excerpts from an article, “Time of Thanksgiving,” by Billy Graham, November 22, 2009, expressed what we should be thankful for:

We should thank God for the spiritual blessings, beyond the power of human tongue to describe. But more than any other spiritual or material blessing of God’s offer of salvation through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The same one who gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16) is the giver of every other benefit.

This Thanksgiving, I want you to receive the gift of God’s grace which is His Son Jesus Christ. Make it a day of real thanksgiving in which we fall on our knees and give humble and sincere thanks to God for all the spiritual and material blessings that He has poured down upon us as a people.
