Seeking Advice

Now the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”
1 Samuel 6:1-2

The Philistines moved the Ark of the LORD from city to city for seven months, but the plague that God sent among them was not removed. Many of the people died, and others continued to suffer tremendously from tumors––thought to be hemorrhoids. So the Philistines sought out advice from their priests and diviners.

What is the practice of divination? In Latin the word means “to foresee, to be inspired by a god.” It suggests an attempt to gain answers to questions using occult rituals or witchcraft. These practices were forbidden to the Jews.

God told the people through Moses: “‘you shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying [foretelling events]’” (Leviticus 19:26). God also commanded in Deuteronomy 18:10-12:

“There shall not be found among you anyone …who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD…”

Today many people do not see the danger in experimenting with occult practices: astrology, Ouija boards, tarot cards, palm readers or any method of fortune telling. All these practices will open a door to the darkness––they are demonic. As a Christian, rid your home of their influence––turn on the light to get rid of darkness (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

Brother Christians, modern witchcrafts and wizardry are to be abhorred and condemned, and you will be wise to keep clear of them, trembling to be found acting in concert with those who love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil.
