Idols Fail
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away. - 2 Samuel 5:20
David had inquired of the Lord and He told David to go out against the Philistines and He would deliver them into David’s hand. God would provide victory to David and his men. With this promise, David took his men to Baal Perazim and they defeated the Philistines.
The Lord broke through the Philistines and gave David victory, so David called the place Baal Perazim, which means "lord of the breaks.” He gave glory to the Lord. He recognized the hand of the Lord delivered his enemy to him, so he gave all the glory to the Lord.
Look, on the other side, the Philistines ran and left their images behind. Their images were their gods, their idols. When they went out to face David and the army of Israel, they took their idols, thinking they would give them victory over Israel. They believed their man made idols would be able to defeat the one, true, living God. Imagine that.
It sounds crazy, but I believe many people are like the Philistines today, and some of them say they are Christians. They wear their idols in necklaces or put up their idols on altars in their homes. There is nothing wrong with wearing a cross, but it will not protect you from your enemy. All you need is the name of Jesus and you will be protected.
Whatever a man seeks, honors, or exalts more than God, this is the god of idolatry.
