Is God with You?

So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.” Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
1 Samuel 16:17-18

Saul’s servants sought to find a skillful musician. When the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul’s life, if they played their instrument, they believed Saul would become well. David had come to Saul’s servants’ attention; they chose him because he had a tremendous testimony. He was a good example to others.

Notice David’s character description. He was skillful in playing an instrument, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, a handsome person––and the Lord was with him. God’s power was over David’s life! Saul’s servants saw the evidence that the Lord was with Him. In God’s sovereignty, David was slowly introduced into the kingdom. The Lord did not place too much pressure on this anointed young man. David would be with Saul and, for a couple of years, learn how to be his assistant.

Think about our lives. It is important that people see Jesus in us, not by what we say, but by our godly behavior. Like David, we especially need to have a good testimony, especially with all those who are living under our roof––our husbands, wives and children. After all, those in our home know us better than anyone else. If we are giving a bad testimony by the way we are living, we can turn them and others away from Christ.

Like David, do people see Jesus in you? Do they say, “The Lord is with you”? I hope the Lord is with you, as He is with me. This is the greatest goal that we want to accomplish in life.

Trying to be happy without a sense of God’s presence is like trying to have a bright day without the sun.
