Flag Day

During the American Revolution the colonists were not fighting under a united flag. As they fought for their independence from Britain, a decision was made to have a more organized fighting force. In June of 1775, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to establish the Continental Army. This led to the creation of the first “American” flag.
The “Grand Union Flag” is considered to be the first national flag of the United States of America. This flag consisted of 13 alternating red and white stripes, with the upper inner canton resembling the British Union Jack. It was used from 1775- 1777, preceding the Betsy Ross Flag.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes which alternated red and white, and that the union be 13 five-pointed stars set in a blue canton, representing a new constellation. It is believed, the Betsy Ross Flag is an earlier design of the flag of the United States. It was attributed to Betsy Ross, who was called upon by George Washington to make a new flag.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Currently the flag of the United States of America consists of thirteen horizontal stripes alternating red and white, and it has a blue canton with fifty, white, five- pointed stars. Nicknames for the flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star-Spangled Banner.
