A Man of Renown
When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” So the king said, “Inquire whose son this young man is.” Then, as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” So David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
1 Samuel 17:55-58
At this time, it seemed as if Saul had already forgotten who David was in the kingdom. So he sent Abner to discover who was this young fighter? Before Saul, David still had the head of Goliath in his hand. He would not let the head of giant go! It remained his trophy. Saul learned David was the son of Jesse––Saul’s young armorbearer (1 Samuel 16:21).
David’s name would become well-known in Israel. He would become a man of renown––King of Israel. The Word of God has much to say about David, who was in the lineage of Christ:
“I have found My servant David; with My holy oil I have anointed him, with whom My hand shall be established; also My arm shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not outwit him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him. I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague those who hate him. But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, and in My name his horn shall be exalted”
David, as a mere shepherded boy, killed Goliath; this main event in his life moved him forward on his path towards kingship. God exalted His servant David, and even though many would come against him, it did not matter because God was with him.
…the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations.
~1 Chronicles 14:17~
