People of Discernment

Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. Only the house of Judah followed David. - 2 Samuel 2:10

Look at the damage done by Abner’s desire to have power and rebel against the Lord. For two years, the only ones loyal to David were from the house of Judah. This was a true test of discernment. The children of Israel had to decide who they were going to follow, David or Saul’s son, Ishbosheth.

The men who followed David back to Israel used discernment. They knew David had character and integrity. They had trusted in him for a long time, and he had proven to be loyal to them. David was not worried about his men going over to the other side and following Ishbosheth. David knew the faithfulness of his men. He knew and trusted in their faithfulness.

The house of Judah used discernment. They followed David, because they followed the Lord. They saw the anointing of the Lord on David and followed him. The other tribes of Israel had no discernment. They followed a false king—a man raised up by man and not by God.

You have to know there are faithful men and women who will never, ever betray you. They are never looking for attention or promotion. They do their job faithfully and they do it right, because they want to be faithful to the Lord. That is the thing we have to focus on. When we are faithful to the Lord and what he has called us to do, He will send men and women with discernment to come alongside of us to enhance and help in what we are doing.

No man can understand spiritual mysteries by carnal reasons.
