Fighting the Adversary Together

Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lorddo what is good in His sight.” - 2 Samuel 10:11-12

Joab spoke with his brother Abishai and they made an agreement to help each other on the battlefield. If the enemy became too strong for either one of them, then the other would come to their aid. Notice how he encourages his brother to be of good courage and to fight hard for the people of Israel and the cities that God had given them.

As brave warriors they are willing to sacrifice their lives on behalf of those who lived in those cities. Joab placed the outcome of the battle in God’s hands; God in the past had promised to fight for them: ‘for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you’ (Deuteronomy 20:4).

If we are going to defeat our common enemy, then we need to have good plans and work together as a team. Satan wins when we are divided. We need each other and must watch one another’s backs.  When there is unity, love and a willingness to lay our lives down for one another, together, the enemy will be defeated.

As a part of the church, what are you doing for a brother or sister that needs your support as they battle the enemy?

Battles are won, not with weapons, but with God.
