Shedding Innocent Blood
So it was, while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men. Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also. - 2 Samuel 11:16-17
David was not the one to strike down Uriah but nevertheless his innocent blood was on his hands. He was guilty of willful, premeditated murder. Joab also knew full well what David was doing and played right along with his evil intentions.
Proverbs 6:17-18 lists sins that God hates:... A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to do evil.
David still had not humbled himself in repentance before the Lord. He wanted others to believe the lie that Bathsheba’s baby was Uriah’s and not his own. He devised evil plans to try and cover up his sin, and finally he shed innocent blood. Even though the dead do not have a voice their blood calls out to God for His justice.
God had confronted Cain when he had killed his brother Abel by asking him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground (Genesis 4:10). Sin must be confronted, God will act justly.
Later God would confront and convict David of his sin by sending His prophet Nathan to show him what kind of man he had become.
Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
