While Shepherds Watched

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.
Luke 2:8-9

Outside on this dark, starry night, shepherds faithfully watched over their sheep, when all of a sudden an angel stood before them, and, the glory of the Lord shone around. They became afraid at the sight of the angel, and perhaps they covered their eyes to shield themselves from the intense brightness. The angel spoke to the shepherds and calmed their fears:

Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

Incredible, God had chosen humble shepherds to hear about the birth of Christ. The angel’s message told the purpose for Christ’s coming.  He was to be the Savior of the world––for all people. The angel also told the shepherds where to find the Babe, in the city of David. They only needed seek the Babe, wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger to confirm the angel’s wonderful words (Luke 2:12).

Before they left to find the Christ, suddenly the night sky was filled with a multitude of heavenly host––angels praising God saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”(Luke 2:14)

The Bible proclaims to every one of us the good tidings of Christ and the purpose for His coming. That is why Christians celebrate Christ’s birth at Christmas time. If you do not know Christ, then like the shepherds you need only search the Scriptures to find out if these things written about Him are true.

… [They Search] the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
~Acts 17:11~
