Leading a Combination of Workers
Moreover the Nethinim who dwelt in Ophel made repairs as far as the place in front of the Water Gate toward the east, and on the projecting tower. After them the Tekoites repaired another section, next to the great projecting tower, and as far as the wall of Ophel. - Nehemiah 3:26-27
Nehemiah led a mixed group of people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Among them were leaders who set a good example for the other workers. In the Old Testament a person’s name often meant something; it could be that their name stood for what God was doing or a certain situation. If you look up their individual names in a Strong’s Concordance, it is interesting to see what each name means––it is incredible.
Within the different groups of people there were those who would not work at all, they just wanted to make trouble. They tried to get in the way of those who wanted to work and they hindered the plans. It is interesting to read of people who were able to do more work. These people went out of their way to do more than anybody else, and they gave all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ.
It is important to understand that in ministry everyone is not the same, we all have different levels of energy. But what really spoke to my heart, is all the various people that God uses to do His work––it is not just a few people. It shows us as leaders that we need to involve many other people in the work of God. We must teach, lead and guide them into what we want them to do.
God will be able to do a tremendous work if we remain good examples as leaders. He will use each one of us how He fully intended. However, if we get full of pride, or think we know it all and have the wrong attitude, then how can God really use our lives? It becomes impossible. Seriously, we need to stay simple and humble before God.
Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking God uses only “special”people, the strong, the intelligent, the beautiful. We don't think He has a place for the rest of us. We are so wrong!
