Defeat & Death
And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.
1 Samuel 31:5-6
This is a testament to the life of Saul. In one day, Saul, his armorbearer, three sons and all his men died. Saul’s life of rebellion against the Lord led him down a tragic path and he did not go all alone. He took his family and his men with him, all the way to their death.
It is so important to recognize; this did not have to happen. I am not saying Saul would not have died. We are all appointed a day to die, and nothing we do will change that. What could have changed was the way Saul died.
When God anointed Saul king of Israel, He was with him. He was leading and guiding him. He was going into the battle with him, giving him and his men victory. If Saul had continued walking faithfully with the Lord, his death could have been so different, along with the defeat and death of his men.
We can learn two valuable lessons from Saul at the end of his life. It is more important how you finish your walk with the Lord, than how you begin. You want to finish well with the Lord, in obedience to Him. Remember, your life touches others. You do not want to lead people astray. Also, be sure the leaders you are following are godly men and women. Do not follow ungodly leaders. They will lead you to destruction.
The character wherewith we sink into the grave is the very character wherewith we shall reappear at the resurrection.
