In ancient societies, shepherds had the low rung on the ladder. Their jobs were smelly, and the hours were long. When Jesus was born, the heavenly host of angels did not appear to the ruling elite. Instead, they appeared to the humblest people they could find—shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem.
