Targeting Idolatry, Part 1 of 2 (Getting Closer To God)

July 29, 2021

It’s amazing how fast people forget. Right after Israel felt Sinai quake and saw Moses ascend the mountain, they turned to idolatry. We might be tempted to shake our heads in disbelief at their wandering hearts. But sadly, we also turn back to our idols after spiritual mountain-top experiences. In this message we learn what happened after Sinai, and what can happen to us.

When God appeared in thunder at Mount Sinai to deliver the Ten Commandments, He left no doubt that He was absolutely holy. In our age of leniency toward sin, let’s not forget that God has not changed—not one iota. His character is the same yesterday, today, and forever. In this message we learn more of the story of a close encounter at Sinai.

The mountain called Sinai is forever linked with the great visitation of God to mankind, as the people of Israel were represented by Moses. On this mountain, the basic roadmap for living was given in the form of the Ten Commandments. In this message we recount the story of what happens “When God Comes.”

Douglas MacArthur once said, “There is no substitute for victory.” Moses knew that truth, as Israel faced its Amalekite enemies. And from that conflict of old come principles to assure victory in the battles of our everyday lives. In this message we find more lessons from the life of Moses on “Fighting to Win.”

Soldiers know that it’s much harder to achieve victory on the battlefield if you don’t fight to win. There are many battles along life’s road, battles we will lose if we lack the will to win. In this message, we find lessons from the life of Moses on victory, and how to obtain it.

Disappointment: it hits everyone whenever our circumstances don’t match our expectations. But disappointment can turn to bitterness, and we need God’s grace to respond well to the disappointments of life. The children of Israel found bitter waters at Marah. Only a miracle from God made them sweet. And only God can make our bitterness sweet.

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the mountain—or the other side of the Red Sea. Once Israel left Egypt, the real troubles began. The long trek started, and the desert sand took its toll. Inevitably, life has its disappointments. In this message we discover strategies to triumph over them.

The sea in front of you. 600 Egyptian chariots behind you. That's what's called being in a tight place—a place where only God can get you out. In this message, we remember the parting of the Red Sea as Moses and Israel watch God destroy the army of Egypt before their very eyes.

They call it a "can't win" scenario. Pharaoh finally let Israel leave Egypt, but then pursued them in order to kill them. The people said, "we should never have left...bondage is better than death." In this message, we learn that the power of God is on display when we, like Moses, find ourselves in tight places.

It was more than high drama. The Passover taught both Egypt and Israel that God means what He says. Salvation does not come without the shedding of blood. As we journey life’s road, let us never forget the high price paid for our salvation, a price depicted in the terror-filled night in Egypt as Moses and the people saw the angel of death pass over.

It was a night of terror. The angel of death swept throughout Egypt, killing the firstborn of every family whose doorpost had no blood. The Passover was the last plague to make Pharaoh let the Israelites go. But it was more than that. It foreshadowed a future sacrificial Lamb, whose blood would save people eternally.
