It is one thing to have strong faith in God when the sun is shining and all is well with the world. It is quite another when storms come. Storms teach lessons that calm seas can never teach. A boat of prisoners was sailing to Rome when their vessel sank in gale force winds. Were it not for the courage of Paul, a fellow prisoner, all would have been lost. Today we look at the last chapter in an amazing story of faith.

Landlubbers will never know the terror that being caught in a storm at sea can create. The deep is about to become your grave. Paul was on a ship taking him to Rome. Being sure he would get there, he had no fear that he would die prematurely. His courage saved the crew and fellow prisoners, and once again the power of the gospel was evident.

Mature Christians know God’s will is not a flower-strewn pathway. Often, storms arise that threaten to throw us off-course. Paul was determined to go to Rome, knowing it would be a one-way trip. He would take the gospel to the highest levels of government, but while enroute, a shipwreck would slow his journey. Today: troubles on the way to see Caesar.

When the Holy Spirit knocks at the heart’s door, some people believe. Others reject outright. Still others procrastinate. Governor Felix had put Paul off until what he called “a more convenient time.” Later, King Herod Agrippa found himself under the Spirit’s conviction, but in the end, he dismissed the Apostle’s message and went on with his life.

One never knows what a day may bring forth. Locked up for two years, Paul suddenly faces a Roman King. What would he say? He was on his way to Rome, knowing he faced almost certain death there. But not before getting the gospel to the heart of the world’s dominant empire. On the way, he pled his case before Rome’s king in Israel at the time. Paul seizes the moment to make sure the gospel is understood.

Paul knew the end game: almost certain death in Rome. But not before he brought the gospel to as many people as possible. The gospel is making its way into the culture of Rome as prisoner Paul is being taken from place to place before being sent to the capital. With Paul went the power of the Holy Spirit, convicting of sin and birthing new life in those who believed. Paul is now handed off to one of the many King Herods.

What do you do with a political football like Paul? Various Roman leaders punted his case back and forth for two years. Accused of sedition, the Jews wanted him dead. Paul had appealed to Caesar, and ended up in a Caesarea prison. Years passed. Eventually a new governor appeals to Rome’s King in Palestine, Herod Agrippa. And so the gospel was taken to ever higher government levels.

Many people can’t bear to face who they really are. For them, being convicted of sin is an offense, and must be avoided. The Apostle Paul was taken from a Caesarea prison cell and brought before the Roman governor Felix. During their conversation, the Holy Spirit convicted Felix of his sin. But this man would not repent, and told Paul he would see him at a more convenient time: a time which never came.

Felix was a Roman governor in Caesarea, Rome’s headquarters in what is now Israel. His job today? Facing Paul. The Apostle Paul ended up being more than just a criminal defendant. Felix and his wife Drusilla found themselves confronted with the gospel, a message that brought their own sins to light. Today we will watch as the gospel works its power in the ancient world.
