Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

Christ, The Lord Of Our Finances #1 of 3

"The love of money is the root of all evil." Christians running the race of life frequently get tripped up by matters of money. And those issues revolve around ownership. Whose money is it really? Is it mine to do with as I please, or am I just taking care of it for someone else? Christ had much to say about money: words we will hear shortly.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Not all of us can win the hundred-meter dash. But all of us can run to the best of our ability. That is all a coach can expect. For every track star in the Olympics, there are ten thousand runners who will never make the team. But that is no reason to give up. Many believers with few talents approach life with a clenched fist rather than an open hand. Today we will see why God prefers the latter.

Remember high school gym class? Perhaps you never did well in those track events, but the coach kept urging you to do your best. Although we are not equal in abilities, we are equal in our obligation to use our abilities for God wisely. In Bible times, a talent was a large sum of money. Today it signifies an ability. Either way, the parable of the talents shows us how to manage what we have got.

We are not all made the same. Some are more talented than others. But all believers run life's race toward a heavenly goal. We are all given gifts and abilities. But it is how we use them, not how many we have got, that determines the outcome of our race. Rather than complain about what we do not have, let us focus today on how to best use what we have been given.

At the race track, coaches watch their athletes, stopwatches in hand. Because for a runner, time is how victory is measured. The same is true for Christians in life's race. How we use our time determines our effectiveness for God. At the end of this life, we will be judged on our deeds...deeds that took place as the clock ticked off the minutes, days, and years.

Track and field athletes get very familiar with the stopwatch. Their training is a regimen to improve their times, until they win. For the Christian, time is a vital, non-renewable resource. Like a coin, it can only be spent once. How we spend it requires wisdom from God. Why not invest the next fifteen minutes learning how to best use your time?
May 27, 2008
In a race, no time can be wasted. Runners pace themselves, knowing that winners only win by a fraction of a second. For Christians running life's race, the clock is also relentless. Once gone, time cannot be reclaimed. The Bible teaches believers to be "redeeming the time, for the days are evil." Time must be used wisely every day. To see why, stay with us.

Here is some good news: it is never too late. No matter how badly you have blown it, God wants you back. Do you believe this? Many people find themselves along the side of the road instead of running life's race at top speed. They are burdened with guilt, or oppressed with the knowledge that they have failed God as well as man. Today: we will take a look back at a series designed to give you hope.

It is a vicious cycle: human conflict tends to spawn more conflict. There is no end to "getting even" until someone gives up. One of the deepest ruts on the racetrack of life is carved out when you are the victim of someone's vengeance...someone who may never forgive you. Today: the counseling room is open...you are about to get some biblical advice on what to do.

When you try to swat a bee, be sure he will try to sting you. And when you hurt other people, they may just try to hurt you back. One thing kids learn real quick is how to get even. Taking revenge is a natural reaction when we are offended. But the Scriptures command us to not seek revenge. Today: rising above our instincts and allowing God to be the one who makes things right.

Someone has said, "I love the church…it is the people in it I cannot stand." Whenever people interact, people can have conflict. The Apostle Paul wrote, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men." This means extending forgiveness and seeking reconciliation when conflicts arise. Today: some practical "how-to" advice.
