Rescued from Dangerous Rationalizations Part 1

October 22, 2012

Football players call it “putting on your game face,” projecting an air of invincibility whether or not you feel that way. To some degree, everyone projects an outward appearance that may not square with inner reality. With regard to salvation, it is easy to make yourself and others believe that all is well when it is far from it.

The Eclipse Of God
Just as the moon obscures the sun’s light during an eclipse, today’s radical secularism has obscured the light of God. But God’s light still shines—and He is calling us to shine His light in our growing darkness. Is God more tolerant than He used to be? Pastor Lutzer shows how God is both a God of wrath as well as grace; that He is both merciful and just, and both a redeemer and a judge. Deepen your love for our unchangeable God of the Bible and be empowered to proclaim the light of truth in a culture of darkness. When carpenters renovate a house, it is very common for them to do some demolition before they can begin the new construction. Often they uncover hidden water damage that has festered for years. Cleaning out the rot must be done first, then the new work can start. In Romans chapter two, Paul details the hidden rot of sin that infects everyone and the self-deceptions people use to keep up their outward appearances.

When we adopt an aura of religious respectability, it is amazing what dark secrets lie beneath the surface where no one can see. So many of us do the same things we accuse others of. We deceive ourselves and say God makes an exception for us, but not for them. Paul excoriated the Jewish religious elite for causing God’s name to be blasphemed.

Those who invest like getting a tip from somebody who has the inside track, someone who can give them an edge. It is like the religious elite who thought their status gave them a sure shot at God’s favor when it came time for God to judge them. Paul demolishes that kind of self-deception in Romans chapter two, telling us that God does not show favoritism.

Religion can prevent people from understanding the truth about themselves. Religion can breed the pride that says “I’m OK.” In Romans chapter two, Paul addresses the religious elite of his day and how ceremony had insulated them from God’s analysis of their hearts. Self-deception is especially deep when expressed in religious terms.

The small minority who push the gay lifestyle are successful in making their voices heard loudly in the public media. If you believe sex belongs between man and wife, you are deemed “out of step.” But God’s standard for moral behavior is revealed in Romans chapter one in crystal clear detail. Today we will discuss the massive moral deception that is gripping society and what God expects from those who call on the name of Christ.
