Ensnared By Images, Part 3 of 3 (The Ten Commandments)

July 20, 2020

God’s prohibition of graven images was for our own good as well as for His glory. However innocuous, any image of God can become an idol, and God is firmly against idolatry. How serious is this? Can we use objects such as crosses, rosaries, and icons in our worship?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. “I am the Lord, that is My name. My glory I will not give to another, neither My praise to graven images.” There is no ambiguity here. It’s clear that God will not tolerate the worship of images. But does that include crosses, crucifixes, or icons? Some people find these objects very meaningful. Do they violate God’s commandment?

Is a picture ever wrong? We need to understand God’s commands prohibiting images meant to represent Him. People disobey this commandment daily, giving their worship to a vast array of idols, carvings, pictures, and icons. Why is this wrong? What does God think of these images?

It’s in the nature of man to worship something, even deities made of wood and stone—or money, technology, and power. But God makes it clear that we humans have a Creator who will not tolerate any idols, even when the idol is ourselves. In this message we learn why the first commandment requires that nothing replace God in our allegiance.

God rightfully demands our full allegiance and focus. “No competition is allowed,” according to the first of the Ten Commandments. Yet people today worship almost anything except the true God who made them, and the result is moral chaos. Every person has a god. The question is: who do you serve?
July 14, 2020
God does not tolerate competition. He wants to be supreme in our lives, and He made that clear by writing on a tablet of stone the first of the Ten Commandments. It’s commandment number one for a reason. Do you believe these commandments mean something for your life today?

When confronted by the standards of God, we are shown to be dead, deceived, and deluded. God’s moral laws, as laid out in The Ten Commandments, were given to Moses to reveal first God’s holiness, and then our need for His grace. The Law is a clear look at who we really are—and only God’s grace can bridge the gap.

According to the law of gravity, when you drop a stone, it falls to the ground. On this earth, that law is immutable. God’s moral law has the same force. The commandments He gave to Moses define His character, and His expectations of our behavior. In this message we learn why God’s moral law shows us who we really are.

The great moral code God gave to Moses contains principles for governing our relationships with God and with each other. That code shows us who we are, and more importantly, who God is. In this message, we begin a series on The Ten Commandments and what they mean for us today.

Keeping marriages together is the key to keeping society from crumbling. The family is in big trouble, and it’s up to believers in Christ to demonstrate marital and family wholeness. Listening to each other is vital if a couple is to stay under the same roof.
