A battle cross to mark the place of a death does not mean much to people who did not know that person, but it symbolizes a great loss to those who knew them. Jesus died on a cross to win a battle for us but it only means something if we are in relationship with Him. Until we have a relationship with God we are not able to have intimacy and true love in relationships with others.
