The Light Shines In Jerusalem

November 6, 2022

What are we willing to do because of our passion for God? Paul’s determination to settle a church split in Jerusalem drove him into hardship, and eventually, to be on trial in Rome. In this message, we consider Paul’s dilemma and defense. We too are called to give our lives to carry out God’s desires.

The continuation of the church always depends on its message. The early church at Ephesus stood against worshiping the goddess Artemis, which affected the city’s silversmith business. In this message, we review nine lessons from the church in Ephesus. What will it cost us to follow the message of the cross?

How do our vocations bring glory to God? In the godless city of Corinth, Paul laid a healthy foundation for a lasting church. In this message, we learn truths about facing opposition to the gospel. When doctors, lawyers, teachers, and businesspeople live out the gospel with integrity, the world is turned upside down.

How do we shine the light of Christ in a complex culture? Paul used the beliefs and culture of the Athenians to explain the real God, the real essence of man, and the very real need of salvation Christ offers. In this message, we identify three responses to the gospel. The reactions are mixed—much as it is today in our idol-saturated culture.

How do we share the good news in hostile places? Because Paul and Silas believed the gospel was the power of God, they weren’t intimidated as they shared the gospel in Philippi. In this message, we unlock two motivations to witness for Christ: faith and joy. The gospel can change any heart—like a prison door flinging open.

When God is not our priority, our self-absorption destroys both us and our relationship with Him. When God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son of the promise, the only fitting response was obedience. In this message, we ascend the mountain with Abraham and Isaac to find three lessons about worshipful sacrifice. Are we putting the Lord first?

Even if we say we do not love the world, we can be tempted to violate our consciences. Lot compromised because his faith was too weak to stand against Sodom’s relentless debauchery. He lost his testimony, his family, and his character. In this message, we apply lessons from Lot’s failure. Is God faithful even when we fall hard?

Christians are called to have an impact on the world. When Abraham’s neighboring cities faced fire and brimstone, he interceded for them. In this message, we contemplate lessons on prayer for others, for our cities, and for our families. Despite Abraham’s mediation, the cities were destroyed. Did his prayer make a difference?

When God is silent, we often doubt His promises. After the birth of Ishmael, Abraham did not hear from God for years. In this message, we discover three lessons about the desires of the flesh and true submission to God. We cannot live as a child of promise and a child of the flesh at the same time.

We might be the victim of our own decisions or others. Abraham and Sarah tried to engineer their circumstances so their maid, Hagar, would bear a son—an heir. In this message, we look at God’s command and promise to Hagar, who was the victim of the decision. People do not have the last word. In our despair and our extremities, God sees and intervenes.

How do we know God is working in us to bring about His purpose? In Genesis 15, God makes a covenant with Abraham—entirely based on His own word. But Abraham is obsessed with the problem of the promise. In this message, we are invited to a covenant without conditions. God says He will do what He promises—our eternities depend on it.
