This month we are looking at our spiritual enemy. He is called by different names in the Bible – each one giving us insights into his methods of operation.
One of those names is the devil. It means “the divider.”
Jesus knew the importance of unity. He said that a house divided against itself cannot stand (Mark 3:25). He prayed fervently that his followers would be one as he and the Father were one (John 17:20-23).
The devil knows the importance of unity. That’s why he incessantly attempts to divide: marriages, friendships, teams, races, tribes, and nations. If warring factions hate one another, good won’t be accomplished.
Paul warned that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities of the dark world (Ephesians 6:12).
Behind all the potential divisions in the world stands a cackling devil who delights in division. The person who supposedly caused your relational rift wasn’t the original source of the disunity. The same is true about marital, racial, and national separations.
The devil is the one dividing people. That’s what his name means.
That’s why Jesus taught his followers to love one another (John 13:34-35). No person can be immune to this love being given to them – even our enemies (Matthew 5:44). We must forgive others as God has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:32).
Sometimes it seems impossible to love the person who hurt us. When you feel this way, ask the Jesus who lives in you to love that difficult person through you.
When you do, division is defeated. Unity wins.
And Jesus’s kingdom of love is advanced through you.
That’s a goal all of us should strive for in 2018.
