If you truly want to pray with greater authority, it’s important to nourish yourself daily on God’s Word. That’s why I continually encourage you to work on creating a habit of the morning launch.
Spend time with God early. Or as my husband always says, “Put first things first.” I challenge you to carve out just a half hour first thing to seek God before your day gets gobbled up by lesser things.
A simple way to start a Bible reading plan is to read through the Gospel of John. Commit to reading just one chapter for 15 minutes each morning. Then ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate one verse out of your reading to ignite your heart. Write the verse on a 3x5 card or in your journal. This will be your watchword for the day. Meditate on it. Memorize it. Pray it. You can even pray this verse over several specific concerns which you might want to jot down on your card or in your journal.
Sometimes it helps to compare several translations to get a more complete understanding of your Scripture reading. Bible Gateway has made it easy. You can even look at several versions at once. Check out three versions of John 1:
Here’s a training tip from another of my spiritual heroes:John Wesley’s advice on reading your Bible was to “be sure to read ... with great attention, with proper pauses and intervals so that you may allow for the enlightenings of divine grace.”
Lord, I wonder. Do I truly believe that time spent in your Word and prayer will change my day? Change my world? Change your world? Your Word never returns void. Empower my prayers with your Word and bring your light to this broken and hurting world. Give me strength this week to carve out my time with you early. Help me keep first things first. In Jesus’ name, amen.
