Galatians 5:1-12 Part 2

February 14, 2020

If you’ve been with us in our study of the book of Galatians you’ll know the Galatian Christians we’re being drawn into legalism.  False teachers had come in and were perverting the gospel message.

It’s an age-old problem that exists still today. One way we can avoid falling into legalism is to hold fast to the Word of God and the freedom we’ve been given in Jesus.  Pastor James Kaddis draws that out from Galatians chapter five.

The God of the bible is a God who liberates not enslaves. When someone actually experiences the grace of God, it changes and frees them to be all that the Lord created them to be. But as we’ll discover today, some who have experienced this wonderful freedom, choose to go back to the place of bondage.  This was happening in the churches of Galatia, and we’ll hear all about it today on Light on the Hill.  Pastor James Kaddis enters Galatians chapter five today.

Jesus promised who He sets free is free indeed. Yet the apostle Paul warned the Galatian Christians to stand fast in their freedom and not get entangled in a yoke of bondage. That can easily happen to us if we’re not careful. The New Testament book of Galatians in part warns that turning from grace can rob the Christian of their blood bought freedom.  Join us today in chapter four.

If you’re honest with yourself, I’m sure you can identify some weaknesses and failures.  We all have them.  Even the apostle Paul did.  And yet, in spite of it all, God can do amazing things in and through us if we’re open to it.  That’s the big takeaway from this passage in Galatians four, verses 12-31.

Pastor James Kaddis shows us today that the people of Galatia we’re falling back to the elementary aspects of the Universe rather than entering into all that God wanted to do in their lives.

Maybe like many you had an older sibling, or parent that would take you by the hand and lead you to school every morning.  That’s exactly what the law of God was intended to do.  To take us by the hand to school… leading us to Jesus Christ.  When you come to understand that, it makes all the difference in how you relate to the law.

We’ve been learning recently that we’re made right with God by faith in what Jesus did at the cross on our behalf.  And not by the keeping of the law.  Put another way, salvation is a gift to receive not achieve.  The Judaizers in the region of Galatia, were preaching something far different as we'll discover today.

Have you ever tried to do something that was way out of your league?  Today we’re going to see that many make the mistake of trying to get to heaven by living perfectly.  It simply can’t be done.  But thankfully, someone lived the perfect life for us.  And through faith in Him, the door of heaven swings wide open to us.

How do you relate to God?  Is it based on your performance? Can you be made right by human effort? Does God help those who help themselves? A popular concept to be sure.  But is it the among the greatest misconceptions in the world today?  We’ll get some answers to these important questions on today’s Light on the Hill.

“You’ve got it in you, you can do it!”  Many of us were taught to think that way from an early age.  But when it comes to our salvation, we need to realize we can’t do it, but Jesus did it for us.  We’re talking about how we get to heaven, through trusting in Jesus alone, today on Light on the Hill.
