God’s Rescue Plan
God placed two people with clean souls in the Garden of Eden. But when Adam and Eve chose to disobey, their hearts became sinful. The penalty for their sin was death: “For in the day that you eat from [the tree of the knowledge of good and evil] you will surely die” (Genesis ). As the first parents of mankind, they passed their sin nature to every person born.
We all enter the world with our hearts rebelling against God. Just as a toddler will defy his parents by touching a forbidden item, we disobey our Father because we prefer to follow our own desires. It is not our wrong actions that condemn us. But rather it’s our corrupt nature.
Actions, good or bad, will not dictate where people live eternally. Apart from the Lord, no one is righteous. Not a single person does enough good to earn a place in heaven. But the Father loves us and wants us to spend eternity with Him.
Before the creation of the world, He planned a solution. The rescue plan was simple. A perfect sacrifice had to be made for mankind’s sin. That way, we can be made blameless before a holy God. Anyone who accepted this sacrifice would lose the old corrupt nature and receive the Holy Spirit as a guide.
Jesus Christ was the sacrifice. He died on the cross, bearing all of our sin. When we receive salvation, our old sinful self dies with Him. The Holy Spirit comes to make our hearts new so we can find joy in obeying God. We are rescued and set free!
