Think Different. Live Different. - "Grace," Part 2

Moses' face when he saw the glory of God at Mount Horeb was shining, and yet it repelled people. The law came through Moses. Jesus' face after his transfiguration was shining too, and yet it attracted people. Grace and truth come through Jesus Christ.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? This triad of virtues: faith, hope, and love--why is the greatest of these love? Because in heaven there will be no need for faith because we'll see Him, and there will be no need for hope because hope will have been fulfilled; all that is left is love. Heaven is a world of love--beautiful, real, possible, filled with grace, and offered to us.

We may meet Christians who worship differently than we do, who look different, who have a different language and culture--and yet we're one. When you meet a Christian, you know you're one in spirit. There's a mission purpose to this unity.

One of the most mistaken teachings of today is to say that we can make people more moral or make them behave in a way that we approve of. But all that happens is that people outside the church feel annoyed that we are dictating to them how they should behave. It doesn't work, because God must do it. Only God can bring holiness.

We can use the things of the world, but we shouldn't be controlled by them. We can take ideas, practices, and things from other cultures and reshape them and use them for God's glory. We can be discerning to use tools that were created outside of a strict Christian background because God is the God of whole universe.

The Reformation was a time when great Christian leaders rediscovered the message of the Gospel in the Scriptures. The reformers articulated a way to be in the world but not of it, and revival followed.

The concepts of sin and being justified by grace as a gift have all become too familiar, like a well-worn teddy bear. Pastor Josh teaches on the dangers of familiarity. We need a fresh insight into the same truth so it hits us anew.

JOY comes from putting Jesus first, then Others, then finally Yourself. So often we put it the other way around. Even for those who are discouraged, joy can be found. Jesus offers complete joy and a pathway to experiencing the reality that is not based on our cirucmstances and that is more than merely happiness.

It's a glorious vision to be united with our family and friends in faith. Jesus wants us to love each other so others know we are His disciples. We all want to be like that, but how do we love each other and be united when it's so hard?

One great heresy that the Western church has been captivated by is consumerism. Since everything in our society is excessively marketed and sold to us, our natural default mode is to think of church in the same way. Church has a product marketed to me--am I going to buy it or not?

We tend to think of our identity as being on a voyage of self discovery. But Christians are on a journey to become more like Jesus. Our task is not to "find ourselves" but to become who were made to be.
