The Bible Explained: Work, Part 1

We need to get out of the trap of viewing work as separate category from what happens at church, and stop thinking of it as what happens from 9 to 5. Our work often defines us and our identity. We need to see how work can be spiritual by orienting our work around our service of God. Our identity is in Christ first, and out of that flows our work.

Christian suffering has a purpose because it is incomparable to glory. It is like childbirth and it is God's plan for our glory to come. It points to the certainty of what is ours in Christ in heaven.

There's a certain controlling mindset that characterizes those outside of Christ. That doesn't mean that they indulge in obvious public evil, but at its root, this attitude is hostile to God and it continues the rebellion begun by Adam and Eve.

Most false teaching is built upon a doctrine that we didn't fall that far and therefore we can raise ourselves up with a series of rules and rituals. If you want to restore Christ, you've got to preach the seriousness of sin.

This passage teaches us to trust God and His grace alone for salvation. When you downplay sin, you diminish salvation. When you dilute depravity, you undermine mercy. When you speak mildly about our rebellion, you cannot speak loudly of God's grace.

An idol is anything or anyone you put in the place of God in your heart and mind. Idols reflect what you want God and your life to be like.
