Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The whole Christmas story is moving, but the sentimentality can get in the way of the amazing truth that God's solution to the world's problems is humility, meekness—and power—in a little baby come to save us.

Boaz is a hero in this story as the redeemer, using the resources that God has given him. Boaz takes responsibility, and there's a call here for men not to be passive but to be redeemer figures over the areas of life that God has given them to take care of.

One of the most important steps in spiritual growth is to bring the stories we tell ourselves into line with the gospel story. The whole purpose of this story in Ruth is to weave into our minds the right stories to tell ourselves: that you are loved, that God is the Creator, He's out to win you, and His plan will be fulfilled in your life if you turn to Him.

As we head into the book of Ruth, we find a cinematic story that you can almost see and feel. For this Israelite family to go to Moab was to head into enemy territory, almost as if we we were to leave church for a mosque to escape economic hardship or a political disturbance.

Everything is to be guided by the principle of The Name. We should ask ourselves, "Can this be done or said in Jesus' name?" If we cannot say or do something in a way that reflects what Jesus would say or do, then we should not say or do it!

Some see church as a social club or a dating agency. People like the idea of church in the sense of having a community, but they're not really into God so they keep Him at arm's length. Church must be more than that, it must be biblical and focused on Christ.

The Old Testament gatherings or assemblies are what we would now call churches, and this passage provides good lessons as we gather together as God's people today.

It is one of the great signs of the decay of modern life that we no longer feel safe in our cities. Why is that? Is it because of a lack of education, economics, or inadequate government action? Fundamentally, it's a spiritual issue. Pastor Josh explains why.

Whereas we tend to feel that absolute power corrupts absolutely, the Bible teaches that our corruption comes from within. The way to bring healing to our situation is to willingly and joyfully submit to the governing authority of God Himself.
