Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Be encouraged! Don't let anyone tell you that your role as a Christian at home or at work is insignificant. It has global, salt-of-the-earth, light-of-the-world significance! This means that everything we do as a Christian has purpose and a global impact.

If you are being persecuted for being a child of the promise, it is a telling identity marker that you are His. Who are you really? Are you defined by your parents, where you live, your gender, or by your relationship with Christ?

We tend to rely on authorities and look for footnotes, but the Sermon on the Mount is the King teaching about the Kingdom. When Jesus says, "I tell you," it's a claim to supreme authority.

The idea of meekness is power under control. So it's not weakness, and it does include boldness. A meek person has been well trained; he or she is not easily frightened or apt to run away.

Perhaps you've been looking in all sorts of other places for God. You've gone to people trying to sort out your problems. Jesus says He is the blessing, and if you really seek Him with a pure heart, you will find Him!

The Sermon on the Mount is often thought of merely as an ethical framework or a set of rules. But in a Christ-centered framework, it has two purposes: to show us that we could never be perfect, and to point us to the One who can save us.
