Life to the Full: Globally, Part 2

Perhaps there is something in your life right now that you do not understand. Maybe it's something intellectual like a doctrine, or a place of suffering and you aren't sure why God would allow it. It is only through the lens of the cross and the resurrection, and ultimately heaven, through which everything can be understood.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Church stuff, like the music or the building or the good works people do, is not what church is meant to be about. Jesus is real and present by his spirit, and church is about Him. You can meet him and know Him.

Mary's anointing of Jesus is preached about and remembered to this day. This extraordinary, sacrificial gift has reverberated down through the years and calls us to realize that our sacrifices for Jesus will have an eternal impact as well.

There is a great distance to be travelled between the head and the heart. How do we make that connection? There needs to be an intellectual grasp of the truth, but in order to really know God, you have to taste and see that He is good.

The power of the resurrection is not intended to only give you hope for your deathbed. It is intended to free you so you no longer live in the shadowlands of death. You have this resurrection power beginning to be at work in you now. We are in Christ now and are on the path to glory.

So many people are turned off from religion because it's too commercial or manipulative, but they do believe in God. When the church attempts to squeeze itself into the mold of what it thinks are the expectations of society, it becomes just what people are not looking for.

Jesus was deeply moved at the death of Lazarus. This word can also be translated "angry." Jesus is angry because death itself is the last enemy over which Jesus alone has the victory.

It is deeply ironic that those you would think would believe, do not. And those who you think would be the last people in the world to believe, they do. John is teaching us that faith works counterintuitively, different from what we would expect.

In today's passage, Jesus' references to a good shepherd would have been completely understood by his audience. They would have known what a shepherd is and does. The idea of the shepherd-king is deeply rooted in Israel's history going back to David. Today we learn about the Good Shepherd.

Jesus had a sense of urgency and made a deliberate use of his limited time. He wasn't just meandering around the hills of Jerusalem. He had an agenda and a job to get done, and He was very focused on it. As His disciples, we should have the same urgency to proclaim the gospel today.

It is thought by so many that suffering is a conundrum for Christianity. But actually, suffering is a confirmation of the Christian worldview and points to the Christian gospel. We worship a Christ who suffered. Jesus explains the purpose of suffering—that the works of God might be displayed.
