Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? God often uses unlikely heroes, and this is encouraging for us because we often feel God can't use us. But by grace He can.

Tests from God help us grow up and produce character, perseverance, and hope in us. Tests are intended to shore up our faith and produce maturity—if we receive them well. If you're going through a testing time, realize that it has a good purpose behind it, even though that doesn't make it any less difficult. - Judges 2:6 - 3:6

We do not expect you to believe in God just because your parents do. You must encounter God and know Him yourself. You must find out for yourelf what He has done. Faith is not like a virus that can be caught just by hanging out with other Christians! - Judges 2:6 - 3:6

The Old Testament preaches the gospel and is the Scripture of Jesus and the New Testament church. The Old Testament is intended to lead us to Christ, and the book of Judges does just that. - Judges 1:1 - 2:5

Ecclesiastes is saying that you have to realize that one day you'll have to stand before the One who knows the secrets of every human heart. It's telling you that if you haven't thought about judgment lately, it might be time to do so.

God says to them, "I will give you your heart's desire if you will keep my covenant." The great truth of the book of Judges is that God wants the best for you, but that you need to turn, follow Him, and receive it. - Judges 1:1 - 2:5

Why does Joshua tell them to put away their gods? John Calvin said that the human heart is an idol factory because we are always tempted to make them. What are the idols for us today? Our idols may be less concrete, but we must still make a choice whom we will serve today. - Joshua 24:14-28

If you're looking for an encounter with God, learn from Joshua. He prepares for battle by following the standard ordinances that God had determined. Sometimes we think we need to go on a mystical retreat to have an encounter with God, but we just need to go to church, read the Bible, pray, take communion, and pray that God encounters us. And that's what God does for Joshua. - Joshua 5:13-15

For the young men who were Israel's spies to stay in Jericho as foreigners and blend in was a clever ruse, but a risky one. Jesus also took risks in being a friend to sinners. It's such good news that Jesus is like that, because that means He is willing to associate with you and me! - Joshua 2:1-24

Real faith—trusting God and commiting to Him—can often feel like risk. The story of Joshua taking down the walls of Jericho is about risk—from the perspective of Rahab and the spies and the people of Jericho. Faith and commitment are at the heart of this story. - Joshua 2:1-24
