We all agree that governments do charity badly, very badly. But the church can make the same mistakes. Scores of well-meaning Christian pastors, deacons, and laity are taking the call seriously to help the poor and to visit the fatherless in their affliction. They throw their energies into “Short Term Missions,” inner-city relief, single mom assistance, and other efforts. But are they doing more harm than good? Brian Fikkert, co-author of the book “When Helping Hurts,” explains the method and goals of biblical charity. Giving ourselves up for Christ involves far more than throwing a few bucks at a problem. You will find this thoughtful conversation a helpful addition to the work Jesus assigns to us while we are here on Planet Earth.
