Stages of Grief Over Betrayal

September 15, 2020

When Phil Waldrep was betrayed by a close friend and coworker, he forgave him and took steps to rebuild his friendship. But when Waldrep's friend betrayed him a second time, the anguish and hurt of this man's actions caused an inner struggle that wasn't easy to recover from. Waldrep walks us through the various stages of grief he dealt with, including denial and anger, and remembers the defining moment when he knew in his heart he had forgiven the man for his trangressions.

Pastor Scott Sauls, author of the book "A Gentle Answer," joins Dave and Ann Wilson to coach listeners with practical insights on using gentle answers in relationships. Learn the six most powerful words in a marriage. Find out why it's not a gentle response unless the other person says it's gentle, or how we can give a soft answer and still not be gentle. Anger, says Sauls, is a destructive energy—it's a godly thing to be angry only in an effort to destroy problems, never people. Learn how it can actually help save a dying marriage.

Hosts Dave and Ann Wilson are joined by pastor and author Scott Sauls as they continue their discussion on the value of gentle answers in human interactions, especially in the midst of a cultural environment dominated by "us against them" thinking. Pastor Scott Sauls, author of the book, "A Gentle Answer," joins Dave and Ann Wilson to discuss the power of gentle answers in a culture of outrage. Gentle answers communicate, "You matter, your opinion matters." People don't get scolded into agreement, Sauls says. No one ever says "Thank you for lecturing and shaming me." Yes, confront sin with truth, but take the log out of your own eye first, as Jesus commanded.

Dave and Ann Wilson continue their conversation with NFL players Dan Orlovsky, Jon Kitna, and Josh McCown. They talk about the lasting legacy of their years together in Detroit, not just playing football but also letting their light shine (Matthew 5:16). They offer wisdom to parents raising kids who play sports, answering questions like: "Should parents allow their children to play football given all we now know about head injuries (CTE)?" and "Should we allow our son to play travel baseball?"

Dave Wilson is joined by former NFL quarterbacks Dan Orlovsky, Jon Kitna, and Josh McCown to provide an inside peek into their time together with the Detroit Lions. While they did not enjoy a lot of success on the field, they experienced a spiritual revival within their team. By the end of it, they saw over 39 players, wives, and children baptized for Christ. As Orlovsky describes it, all three players were psycho-maniacal, obsessive competitors on the field. But they embraced a higher mission as Christ-followers: to be incredible husbands, remarkable fathers, and amazing teammates.

As the lead singer of the band Sanctus Real, Matt Hammitt had assumed loving Jesus would overcome his neglect of his marriage. But a moment at the dining room table changed everything when his wife, Sarah, made the desperate plea, "I need you to lead me." Matt describes the look on her face that day compared to the joyful look in their wedding photo hanging on the wall. This led not only to their reconciliation, but also to them co-writing the powerful song "Lead Me."
