Bringing Up Boys
With so much confusion about the role of men in society, it’s no wonder we have questions about how to bring up boys in the right way. Why are so many young males in crisis? What qualities should we be instilling in our sons? The culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. To help parents confront this challenge, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has developed a new 10-day email series based on Dr. Dobson’s best-selling book, Bringing Up Boys. It’s designed to equip you to wisely lead your sons to become godly men.

On today’s Family Talk, former U.S. Congressman Bob McEwen joins Dr. Dobson in-studio to discuss what is right about America today. In a time of deep wounds and division within our culture, McEwen exhorts Americans, especially Christians, to be aware of our unique place in history. As President John Adams stated, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” A passionate advocate for homeschooling, McEwen underscores the importance of teaching our kids to fear God, love America, and honor their parents. Only then can we preserve this last and greatest hope on earth. United we stand; divided we fall.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, former U.S. Congressman and Dobson Institute advisory board member Bob McEwen declares that there were two great events in world history. First, Jesus Christ made the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross for our sins. And second, on July 4, 1776, America was born as an independent nation. Despite the obvious lines of division that exist in our country today, we must remain faithful to the principles that built this great nation. It was founded in liberty and has become a lighthouse to the world for the gospel and for truth.

Jason Romano always had a passion for sports, an interest he shared with his father and grandfather. He turned that passion into a dream career at ESPN, producing SportsCenter and Monday Night Football. But sadly, Jason couldn’t always share his "love of the game" with his father, whose alcoholism was a constant source of anguish and shame for the entire family. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of Live to Forgive says the four steps toward forgiveness are to feel the pain, evaluate the trauma, transform the wound, and forgive the abuser. In Matthew chapter 18, Jesus commands us to forgive. If we don’t, we hurt ourselves more than our offender.

The reach of Marxist ideology has spread into our country’s education, corporations, media, and government. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Mark Levin, author of American Marxism, tells Dr. James Dobson that this God-hating, individual-despising worldview is often cloaked in deceptive labels such as “progressivism.” In addition to advocating for homeschooling and school choice, Levin warns parents against sending children to colleges that indoctrinate them to hate America and its precious Judeo-Christian heritage.

When grandchildren become teenagers, grandparents have a tendency to disengage, no matter how close they were with their grandchildren beforehand. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Mark Gregston, author of Grandparenting Teens: Leaving a Legacy of Hope, encourages grandparents to do the opposite, saying this is the time for them to press in, not check out. Rather than being concerned about what’s coming out of their teenage grandchild’s mouth, they should be listening to his or her heart.

If you’re a grandparent, your primary focus should not be what you leave in your grandchildren’s bank accounts, but rather, what you have deposited in their hearts. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Tim Clinton sits down with Mark Gregston to talk about his new book, Grandparenting Teens: Leaving a Legacy of Hope. Mark explains that grandparents can and should be one of the greatest resources for providing stability and Christian discipleship in a teenager's life.

In their 1990 best-seller, Children at Risk, Dr. James Dobson and Gary Bauer, President of American Values, warned readers that there was a "civil war of values" being waged, and a generation of children would be the prize awarded to the victor. Thirty-one years later, the battle for the hearts and minds of our children has only intensified. On today’s edition of Family Talk, hear these two family advocates discuss how we can still win this fight.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "The philosophy of the classroom in one generation is the philosophy of the government in the next." Sadly, in light of the godless curriculum that is being taught in public schools and universities, only 6% of millennials have a biblical worldview. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson and Gary Bauer, President of American Values, revisit their 1990 best-seller, Children at Risk, and discuss how its content was a prophetic message to our society, even today. The question is raised, "How can America be preserved if a rising generation is rejecting the very idea that there is a God who was the author of our liberty?"

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Ginger Hubbard, author of I Can't Believe You Just Said That!, continues her conversation with Dr. Tim Clinton. Ginger offers a 3-step plan for parenting and discipline. First, ask your child heart-probing questions to identify his or her "old self." Second, discourage that behavior. And third, urge him or her to honor God by "putting on" the right behavior. Consider Ephesians 4:22-24, "Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

As Christian parents, we want our kids to behave and be obedient. But we shouldn't want them to act that way solely out of fear of punishment. Today on Family Talk, Ginger Hubbard, author of I Can’t Believe You Just Said That!, explains that our children’s actions and behavior stem from the ongoing transformation of their hearts, as they begin their individual relationship with Jesus. As parents, we can use God’s Word to teach our children which behaviors and actions are sinful, and which ones are pleasing to the Lord.
