Benefits of Justification

Having wrapped up Romans chapter four last time, we now move into chapter five, and underscore The Blessings of Justification. Justification is a central tenet of the Christian faith. We have been justified through the blood of Christ, and we can have certainty that we indeed will be in eternity in heaven with our wonderful savior!

Ask someone on the street the following question: “Do you think you’re on your way to heaven?” Many will no doubt reply, “Well I hope so!” They might even say, “Well I’ve never murdered anyone, and I’ve been a fairly good person.” Such reasoning indicates that they’re under the impression that good works save us. As you know, many religions around the world have traditions and rituals. According to the apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, these traditions have a tendency to lure people into a false sense of security concerning their salvation. It’s the ages old debate about whether we are saved by works, or simply by faith. Paul explains here, once and for all, that we are saved by grace, not by works.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul was adamant about our position in Christ. We are saved by grace and grace alone. He declared that our status here on earth - social or otherwise - has absolutely no bearing on our position in heaven. This was a hard lesson for the Jews to grasp, as they were taught to regard their status as higher than the lowly Gentiles around them.

We have a vitally important message to share with you today concerning, among other things, the current direction of the Christian church in America. It’s not a particularly pretty picture, either. Government officials are openly hostile to Christianity. Pastors are being harassed for preaching biblical truth. Many pastors have succumbed to the pressure and are now teaching a “woke” version of the bible. What can we do? What should we do?

We pick up today in Romans chapter two, where Paul addresses the attitudes of some of the Jews, who felt a sense of superiority over others. As we’ll see today, this kind of attitude is very common today as well, although it has no place in the life of a believer.
