In time, the view of slavery changed and most of America's Founders thought slavery would gradually be abolished. Roger Sherman (Roger Sherman was an early American lawyer and politician, as well as a Founding Father of the United States.) said that "the abolition of slavery seemed to be going on in the U.S. and that the good sense of the several states would probably by degrees complete it." However, succeeding generations did not have the character and worldview necessary to complete the task started by the Founders. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
