What Changes Climate?
Matthew 10:34
“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.”
It would seem that, when we use the term “climate change”, we are referring to the study of any cause or trend in how global climate might be changing. In practice, most people referring to climate change are talking about alleged catastrophic changes in climate, which are supposed to have been caused by human industrial activity.
Those who suggest that changes in climate may not be solely due to human activity are often called “climate change deniers” – as if such people, including many eminent scientists, were the moral equivalent of holocaust deniers – an allegation highly insulting to both the climate skeptics concerned and to the million of Jews, Gypsies, and others who so cruelly suffered before and during the Second World War.
I have noted an interesting parallel between climate change skeptics and evolution skeptics (most of whom are creationists). They suffer the same level of mindless ridicule from the scientific establishment, and, even though their scientific opinions are usually more thoughtful, their views are rejected without serious consideration.
The difference is that many of the climate change skeptics are not Christians, including many atheists and certainly many evolutionists. This makes the parallel appropriate for discussion because we can point to an alternative group of people whose views are opposed for no good reason other than that they are considered “heretical” by the prevailing opinions of our time. Jesus did not promise that all our words would be accepted by society. Indeed, He said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34)
Prayer: Help us, Lord, to speak the truth even when the world does not want us to do so. Help us at all times to speak that truth in love. Amen.
