Water into Wine
by Berni Dymet

John 2:8-9a He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.' So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine...

Every time I mention alcohol or wine on air, I get a flood of protests about me encouraging people to drink.  Well, I'm not, so please don't write!  Drinking in moderation is absolutely fine, drinking to excess isn't.  It's not rocket science, is it?

But you know, I've always been kind of puzzled by one of Jesus' first miracles - turning the water into wine at this wedding where they ran out.  And it wasn't non-alcoholic grape juice - it was definitely the real stuff.  That's why the steward of the wedding said, "Gee, most people serve the good stuff first and the cheap plonk after the guests are drunk."

Jesus only does the things His Dad in heaven calls Him to do.  And one of the very first public miracles - is turning the ritual water that the Jews used to cleanse themselves with at the wedding according to religious law - He turns that into Chateau Nuf du Pap.

Why does He pick that miracle?  What do you reckon God's trying to tell us?
