The Contest of Gods

October 28, 2018

Where do we derive our security, our purpose, our motivation in life? Where is the pure object of our affection focused? Our message this week takes a trip to Mount Carmel in Israel and a contest of gods between Baal of the Caanites and Yahweh, the God of the Israelites and the prophet Elijah. It is the type of story that leaves us asking, What do we really believe?

With all the loneliness in the world, sometimes we need a special friend with whom we can openly safely share our most intimate thoughts. Someone who is always there when we need them with encouragements and affirmations. We need God with skin on.

Prayer is a gift given to us from our great God, a privilege. It means we can connect with the Creator of the universe, and it is an important part of our walk with Him. Let’s look at an incredible New Testament story that reveals the power of prayer among believers in Christ.

Is prayer your first impulse or last resort? The story of Nehemiah is one of restoration, but also one of faithfulness. It was written for workers in God's Kingdom - the Church - and offers us great advice when facing overwhelming problems and odds.

How is your prayer life? Prayer is the language of faith and a privilege of intimacy with the Lord of the cosmos. God is in the business of erasing our naughty deeds and restoring us and transforming us. He does not want to leave us stuck in the same destructive patterns of our sin and shame, but desires to maximize our created best potential as His beloved children.

As human beings, we seem to be fascinated by the subject of greatness.  We talk of greatness in the world of sports. Historians talk of great statesmen, great Presidents.  In entertainment, we argue over who are the greatest actors or movies or bands of all time.  In our story for today we find Jesus giving His take on the subject of greatness.

It is music to our ears when we hear someone say to us, I'm all-in! Jesus, also, wants to hear and see this all-in attitude from His followers. He calls us to "take our our cross" - deny ourselves - and follow Him, which requires a very high commitment on our part. Let's talk more about this cross we must bear and the benefits of doing so in our message.

If you ask theologians what the most misused verse in the Bible is, many of them will likely reply it is Luke 11:9 – “Ask and it will be given . . .”  As with any Bible verse, it can be lifted out of its specific context and made to fit a particular theological slant. However, that is a dangerous thing to do. Join us as we discover the context and story behind this popular verse.

In all likelihood, you are probably familiar with these words from Scripture: “For surely I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” They are beautiful, comforting words, but we need to ask, What are they really all about? What is their meaning for us?

How do we hold on to hope? How do we rise above despair to be faithful to what God asks us to do? Discouragement is a part of life.  It can consume our spirit and make us want to quit. Let’s look at Jeremiah’s faith journey to learn that which will empower and inform our journey of faith today.

Life is like a bike tire. We don't intentionally take air out, it just leaves. And just as it's harder to peddle with flat tires, it's not as fun to live when the air has leaked out of our lives. Life has a way of deflating us.  It is to the people who are feeling like flat tires that a sweet invitation comes today. "Come to me all who weary and are carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest."
