Politics is brutal business. Candidates fire arrows at their opponents at will. They attack each other’s platform, political records, and they even attack each other’s character. And normally, at it’s ugliest, the candidates declare their opponent unfit for the office.
Not only do they declare it, more often than not this indictment becomes the center piece of their campaign rhetoric. It’s just how politics works in this day and age.
They want you, the voter, to think the opposing candidate is not qualified, that he or she doesn’t have what it takes to fill the office, from the highest office in the land to local government.
Our enemy wants us to think the same thing when it comes to the Christian life, that we are unfit to be called children of God. He is constantly firing arrows of accusation our way, questioning our actions, our record and our character.
Sadly, too many Christians listen, and they buy into Satan’s rhetoric. They declare themselves unfit to be called a child of God, that they don’t have what it takes. Instead of standing firm in the grace of God, they live with condemnation and guilt over their actions and thoughts. They believe that they are not worthy of God’s love.
Maybe you have bought into the lies of Satan, and have believed the accusations that you are not fit to be called a child of God. If so, here’s good news for you.
God has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. You are fit because God has made you so in Christ. This is a gift of grace.
1 Peter 2:9 is a wonderful statement of who you are: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
