Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:8-9
These are the words of Peter, an eyewitness ... a man who walked with Jesus. I'm sure that he could tell us some stories; stories about Jesus healing the sick (his mother-in-law, for one), calming the sea, walking on water, feeding the five thousand, and even raising the dead. He could tell us how he stood at a distance and watched Jesus die, observed them take His body down from the cross, and put it in a tomb. He could also tell us that he found the tomb empty and saw Jesus alive! His readers had not seen Jesus, but he had. And the one who witnessed it all, handed off the faith.
We are just like the recipients of this letter. Someone handed off the faith to us. We have not seen Jesus, but we have seen the line of transformed lives He has left behind. So we love and trust Jesus even though we haven't seen Him.
I don't know what you are experiencing today, but I know this truth. If you have trusted in Jesus alone as the only way to have a relationship with the living God, you are receiving the "goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls." That certainty produces "inexpressible and glorious joy" no matter whether you're having a "mountain top" or "valley" kind of day.
Father, thank You for Your love and the gift of faith. In Jesus' name. Amen.
