Philip & The Ethiopian Eunuch - Part 1

July 17, 2019

In Pt. 9 of Power & Persecution, we study the last story of Philip mentioned in Acts. We see his obedience to go where God sent him. In the first of Acts 8, we see him in Samaria having tremendous success preaching and baptizing multitudes. All of a sudden at the end of Acts 8, God sends him to Gaza, a desert place to share the Gospel with one man. We talk about Philips obedience to go (even to a desert place) and to go from sharing the gospel to multitudes to only one person. There are many more lessons we learn from Philips life in the last sermon of chapter 8.

In Pt. 8 of our study of Power & Persecution, Pastor Chad examines the story of Simon the Sorcerer. There are many lessons we learn from this portion of Scripture. We see what the Bible says about sorcerery, magic and divination. We also see how someone like Simon can be exposed to Biblical preaching and even signs and miracles and not truly repent and be saved.

Acts 8 is an important chapter in the Bible because the narrative begins to change. Up until now, it is Peter who has dominated the pages of Acts, but now we are going to begin to see others emerge, people like Philip and Paul. In Acts 8, we get a glimpse into why Paul later called himself, "The Chief of Sinners" as he ravages the church going house to house arresting Christians. But again, as our theme suggests, as the persecution increased, so did God's power. Philip goes to Samaria, fulfilling Christ's original command of Acts 1:8, and preaches Christ with great signs and wonders. The result we see is in verse 8, "And there was much joy in the city."

Pastor Chad examines the rest of Acts 5 showing us that as God's power increased on the early church, so did persecution. In this sermon, we learn how Jesus fulfilled His promise to these early believers from Acts 1:8 that power would come upon them to be His witnesses, beginning in Jerusalem. Pastor Chad challenges us by asking if we have the power of God in our own lives to face hardships, difficult seasons and even persecution and to remain a faithful witness of Christ. He shows how the true power of God was not just in the signs and miracles, but in the fact that they were persecuted and "counted themselves worthy to suffer for the Name."

What was the true sin of Ananias & Saphira? When most people read their story, they seem to think their sin was withholding money from God. But Peter makes it clear that they were free to do whatever they wanted with their money. Their true sin was lying to the Holy Spirit. In this challenging sermon, Pastor Chad shows us what true hypocrisy is and how Ananias and Saphira wanted the praise and approval of man.

Koinania is an interesting word in the Bible. It literally means, "Community, to have in common." It was the highest level of fellowship experienced by the early church. In Pt. 3 of Power & Persecution, Pastor Chad shows us how the early church were together in their fellowship, together in their testimony to the city and together in their generosity. Study with us the elements that made the early church dynamic and influential in their culture, and how the principles then are still relevant today.
