The Slow and Determined Drift Toward Sin Part 2

April 24, 2024

Today on Abounding Grace we’ll hear about the slow and determined drift toward sin that happened in Lot’s life, that would end up wrecking his life.  It was a series of rather small decisions, that would lead to big consequences later on down the road. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to us.

Humility
When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled, for all believers, true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written.

Pastor Ed Taylor is our Bible teacher, and once again today he’ll take us to the first book of the Bible, Genesis. In chapter nineteen, we see the slow and determined drift toward sin, and then the consequences of unrepentant sin, as Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed.  Let’s see how this relates to the world as we know it, and our personal lives.

We all go through hard times and face challenges in life.  Sometimes it can be so overwhelming, we may wonder if it’s too big for God to handle. But today on Abounding Grace pastor Ed Taylor recalls the story of Abraham and Sarah in Genesis chapter eighteen.  In the midst of it all, the question is asked, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”  The answer is No!  And maybe that’s something you need to be reminded of today, in light of the difficulty you’re facing.

Today Pastor Ed is going to recall a time in Peter’s life where he experienced the transforming work of the Spirit.  He was a different man because of it.  And maybe this needs to happen in your life?

Maybe you’re facing what looks to be an impossible situation today?  Today on Abounding Grace be encouraged as we have a look at Genesis chapter eighteen, and the story of Abraham and Sarah.  Just picture it, Sarah is 90 years of age.  Well past child-bearing age, and yet the Lord tells her and her husband that about this time next year, Sarah will have a son!

Certain skeptics find the miracles in the Bible hard to believe.   From Noah and the flood, to Jonah and the Big Fish... and how is it possible for a woman to bear a child at 90 years of age they ask?  But they fail to realize that God is able to do anything He wants to do in His time.  We’ll focus on God’s faithfulness and ability here today on Abounding Grace as our study of Genesis continues with pastor Ed Taylor.

As we look back over the course of our lives we can see peaks and valleys, successes and failures.  That holds true even with some of the people in the Bible we’ve grown to admire like Abram.  Last time on Abounding Grace we observed Abram make a very bad decision.  And now we fast forward 13 years and we’ll see God’s overruling power in his life.  God is going to change Abram’s name, because He wants him to walk in a new identity.  And pastor Ed Taylor will show us how we too are to walk in our new identity in Christ right now as we turn to Genesis chapter 17.

You might not find it so difficult to trust God when times are good, but how about when you’re waiting on God or times are tough?  And your expectations aren’t met?  Will you trust God then?  Today on Abounding Grace we find Abram and Sarai in the waiting room.  While they should have been trusting in God, they tried to help God out.

Whether it’s in the doctor’s office or in traffic, we typically don’t like to wait!  We grow impatient if we have to wait for something for 10 minutes, but imagine having to wait for something for many years!  Today we turn to the story of Abram and Sarai waiting for their promised son to arrive.  After waiting for quite some time they decide to take matters into their own hands!  Big mistake.

Ask 10 people on the street who is the Holy Spirit, and you might get 10 very different answers. And many are under the impression that He’s just some inanimate force out there. But today on Abounding Grace we’ll learn the truth about the Holy Spirit, and who He really is. He’s a person, has a will and emotions, speaks and empowers the believer for starters.

Genesis chapter fifteen is in front of us today on Abounding Grace.  Last time we heard how the Lord came to Abram, encouraging him not to be afraid because He would protect and provide for Him. We’ll hear today how Abram believed the Lord and God credited it to him as righteousness. That’s a good model for us to consider.
