Word for the World devotionals from Dr. Randy White

Great News!

“Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.” (Acts 13:38-39; NASB95)

The newspapers are filled with news. Some are elated over the election of a new President, others disappointed.  One day the stock market has record increases, the next record declines. Conservatives win initiatives on gay marriage but lose on abortion. All in all, it is a mixed bag at best.

But our scripture passage today is great news! Jesus died an unjustified death, was buried, did not decay but rose again on the third day, and now “through Him forgiveness of sins” is available to “everyone who believes.”

What does this forgiveness bring?  In a word:  Freedom!  Freedom from what?  The text says that our salvation brings us freedom from the things “which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.”  The word freedom is better translated “justification” (of its 40 uses in the New Testament, this is the only time it is translated “freedom”).  So, everyone who believes is justified in a manner that the Law of Moses could not justify.

This reminds us of the blessing we have received in Christ.  He has given us that which we could not have earned, even if we were able to fulfill the law’s demands to the full.  Now, being made righteous (which is the definition of justification), we are free indeed.  Free from sin’s chains, free from the law’s burdens, free to worship and serve in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Rejoice today in freedom!
