Word for the World devotionals from Dr. Randy White

The Source of Faith

"Only do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey.  Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them."  (Numbers 14:9, NASB95)

These words, which Caleb and Joshua had spoken upon their return from the 40-day mission into the Promised Land, were faith-filled words.  But were they just dream-filled, pie-in-the-sky words?  Could Caleb and Joshua really have solid confidence that "their protection has been removed" and thus the strong people of the land were not to be feared?

Genesis 15:16 speaks of a promise of God to Abram, who was told that after his death the fourth generation would return to the land and be given possession.  Until then, Abram and his descendants would be "strangers in a land that is not theirs" (Genesis 15:13).    Caleb and Joshua could count, I'm sure, and they only needed to be able to count to four!

Exodus 6:16-25 records that Levi was the father of Kohath, who fathered Amram, who was the father of Aaron—four generations, as promised!

There are only two reasons the Israelites would reject the report of Caleb and Joshua:  They didn't believe God or they didn't know what God had promised.  These two reasons prevail today among those who fail to display faith.  I will give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume that you believe God.  Do you know what He has promised?  As I visit with Christians, I find a woeful inadequacy in the knowledge of God's Word.  What they do know, they use out of context.  Even the most basic Bible stories are unknown.

Study, to show thyself approved!
