Blessed Weakness
Dr. Randy White

" When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and strong, he and all Israel with him forsook the law of the Lord."  (2 Chronicles 12:1, NASB95)

The Lord had consistently warned His people that when they entered the Promised Land, gained the inheritance, and lived in security, they would turn their backs on Him.  Jesus gave the same warning to His disciples, and Simon Peter insisted, “Even if everyone flees from you, I will remain until death!”

In short order, the Lord was proven right on both accounts.  Prosperity and success breed pride, and pride goes before destruction.

King Rehoboam is just one in a long list of examples of the spiritual failure of physical strength.  When a King and his nation are “established and strong” then there is no need to depend upon the Lord.  When you and I are established and strong, we lean on our own understanding.  When churches are established and strong, they fail to fall before Almighty God in submission to Him.

So there is a “blessed weakness” that brings us to our knees in prayer and to our feet in obedience.  This blessed weakness is seen through the Beatitudes of Matthew 6 and consistently in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Could it be that America’s departure from God was due to her strength?  Do any of the same truths apply to your life or your church?

In His Grace,
