Washed, Sanctified, Justified
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NIV®)
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the
sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
This is written to the Church, specifically to the church in Corinth, but it’s as fresh as today’s news. Paul is reminding us that even though life might seem to be going well for the wicked, they’re not going to have a happy ending. And to keep pride from creeping in, his list of wicked behaviors puts being greedy right there with committing adultery. But then he gives the good news: “That’s what you were, but you’ve been washed, sanctified, and justified.” He’s reminding us that we have the power of Almighty God, the Creator of the universe and all that’s in it, to help us change. Remember that you too have been washed, and sanctified, and justified. Even when living inside His boundaries seems hard, ask Him to help you, and He will.
Heavenly Father, thank You that because of Jesus’ death on the cross for me I have been washed, sanctified, and justified. Help me as I struggle against my weaknesses to live for You within the boundaries You have set for me. Help me to be the man on the inside that I want the world to see on the outside. I’m so grateful that You have promised the Holy Spirit to guide me during all my days on the earth. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
