The Good Fight of the Faith
But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
Flee . . . pursue . . . fight . . . Where did we get the notion that the primary demonstration of being a Christ-follower is filing into church, singing songs, and sitting on our good intentions until we get to heaven? That couldn’t be more wrong. Maturing in the Lord is not a passive process, and it will require of us a willingness to engage in conflict. (Think about the lives of Jesus, Moses, Noah, David, Peter, Paul, or any of the other characters you want to pick from the Bible.) And the biggest battle of our lives is within ourselves. If we will allow the Spirit of God to bring transformation to us from the inside out, the external conflicts begin to reposition themselves. We can say with David, “Yeah, I know he’s a giant, but God can handle this!”
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that there is a part of me that wants my own way and does not want to yield to You. Help me to flee from my carnal nature, pursue the things of Your Kingdom, and fight for the life of maturity You want for me. I long for the eternal life You have promised. Help me to fulfill Your purposes in the earth until that day. In the name of Jesus, our conquering King, amen.
