John 8:31-33 (NIV®)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
Jesus is talking to a group of people who believe in Him, and they are offended. They’ve already accepted His message, and He says, “If you follow my teachings and really are my disciples, my truth will bring greater freedom to your life.” They reply, “Wait a minute! We come from the right group. We’ve got the right DNA. We’ve never been enslaved by anyone. How dare you say we need to be set free!” If you’re a Christ-follower, you know the freedom that comes from acknowledging your sin and being forgiven and welcomed into the Kingdom of God. But God has more freedom for you! Beyond accepting the truth of Jesus as Savior, He wants you to apply His truth to every aspect of your life and experience the joy that only comes from living in the freedom of a life fully devoted to His purposes.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the freedom You freely bestow on all who believe in the power of Jesus to save. Forgive me for the times I have been complacent and content with so little of Your freedom. Expand my awareness of You, Lord, so that I can experience all of the joy life in You brings. In Jesus’ name, amen.
