Persecuted for Him

Philippians 1:29 (NIV®)

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him.

Compared to believers around the world, American Christians have had it pretty easy. When I have had opportunities to sit with believers from Iran or Rwanda or China or Sudan, I have discovered that their trust in God is far greater than what most of us have been required to develop. I’ve come to the conclusion that God is asking us to grow up the Church in our culture. He has uniquely resourced the Church in our nation so that we can be generous to the body of Christ in the earth, but we should not imagine God’s blessings have come to us because of some unique characteristic that makes us special. Let’s be diligent in praying for our brothers and sisters around the world who are being persecuted for their faith. And let’s pray for the American Church, that we would become mature and bold believers who are ready to stand for Christ in any situation.

Information about persecuted Christians and the organizations that work to defend them is widely available on the Internet. Consider adding one of these organizations and the believers they represent to your prayer list.

Heavenly Father, protect all those who serve You both around the world and here in our nation. Hear the cry of those who suffer, and reveal Your love to them through Jesus Christ Your Son. Receive our praise and worship as our grateful hearts are strengthened by knowing You. Forgive us when we thoughtlessly set forth our plans without Your consideration. In Jesus’ name, amen.
