No Others

Exodus 20:1-3

And God spoke all these words:  “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”

If you ask me which of the Ten Commandments the contemporary American church is most guilty of violating, I’d say the first one:  “You shall have no other gods before me.” It’s happened gradually, like the frog in the kettle. In the 1960s, there was a cultural revolution on many levels, and one of the things that emerged was the idea of multiculturalism. Somewhere along the way multiculturalism changed from valuing the ethnic groups among us to suggesting and then demanding that the faith represented by every person or people group should be treated with equal significance. We’re very reluctant to publicly suggest that Jesus is the only path to fulfillment in this life and the next, but God has never amended or rescinded His instruction. It’s still binding on our lives today: “No other gods before me.”

Heavenly Father, I come before You in humility, acknowledging that You are the one and only God, the Creator of all and the Redeemer of mankind. Help me to speak in a way that all who hear will know that You are the only answer for this world’s challenges. I worship You today, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
